School Services

BANKING

Student banking is conducted at school one morning per week through the Commonwealth Bank and is available to any student in our school. This service is operated on a voluntary basis by parents. Applications for banking are available in the school foyer.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE CENTRE

The Centre provides supervisory care at reasonable rates, before and after school. The Before and After School Care Centre also provides a range of activities for the children which include organised sport, team games, art and craft. Homework supervision is also provided by Centre's staff. The Centre opens at 7.00am and closes at 6.20pm. A fee is charged for children collected after this time. It is highly recommended that all children be registered with the Centre irrespective of whether you intend using its facilities. There may be an unexpected situation (sick relative, car accident, etc) when you may need emergency child care. All parents are invited to register their child with the Centre. The $22 registration fee must be paid when your child first uses the Centre. Unless your child is registered with the Centre, s/he cannot be accepted for legal reasons.

BOOK CLUB

As a service, a Book Purchasing Club operates twice a term to encourage reading. Pamphlets listing a variety of books which may be ordered are sent home with the children. The books on offer are chosen for their interest level and appeal to various age groups. The order form with payment is returned to school on a nominated date. About 3 weeks later the orders are delivered to the classroom by our Book Club volunteer parents. There is no obligation to buy. The school receives bonus books from purchases.

BUS TRAVEL

Bus transport is available for children living in the northern section of Mount Colah. All (K-2) children and those (Years 3-6) children living outside a 1.6km radius from school are eligible for free transport. Children must behave in an orderly manner when travelling on the bus. Parents are asked to ensure their children are responsible bus users. If a Kindergarten child is to catch a bus they are required to wear a blue bus badge available from their class teacher. Timetable.

CANTEEN

The school canteen operates on voluntary support from parents. It aims to provide nutritious meals at reasonable prices. Any profits from the canteen are donated to the P&C. A parent committee coordinates the operation of the canteen. Assistance is always appreciated. Please complete the volunteer form if you are available to help. The number of available volunteers dictates the number of days per week the canteen is able to open. A canteen price list is published at the beginning of the school year. Lunch orders are made by writing the order on a paper bag and enclosing the correct money. This is then handed in to the canteen before school.

GROUNDS MAINTENANCE

The expansive school grounds are maintained by teams of parents working on a roster basis. Those who are more familiar with the school act as team leaders. Each kindergarten parent is rostered to assist a school maintenance team about twice a year. Maintenance work involves mowing and trimming edges. With our usual degree of support you should not be called upon more than two or three times a year.

HEALTH ISSUES

SCHOOL VISITS
Every year the children in Kindergarten's hearing and eyesight is checked by a community nurse from the Health Department. Parents are notified if their child requires further diagnostic testing.

Annually a school dental team visits the school to present a short talk about dental hygiene to the children in kindergarten and Years 2, 4 and 6. This is followed up a week later by a free dental examination and assessment. Parents are notified if dental work is required.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES
The NSW Department of Education and Training requires the following periods of exclusion from school for students with the infectious diseases listed below.
Chicken Pox - Exclusion from school until fully recovered. Minimum exclusion - 7 days after first spots appear.
German Measles - Exclusion from school until fully recovered. Minimum exclusion 5 days after rash appears.
Measles - Minimum exclusion 5 days after rash appears.

Ringworm/Scabies - Re-admission to school after appropriate treatment has commenced. A medical certificate detailing treatment is required.

The child will need to remain away from school until the infestation is attended to per policy requirements. Readmission when treatment has been undertaken. Hair should be free from "nits".

IMMUNISATIONS
The NSW Department of Health recommends that children entering school should be immunised against childhood diseases. The Department of Education and Training requires the school to sight an immunisation certificate at the time of enrolment. The certificate is available from medical practitioners. Children starting school require an immunisation booster against diphtheria and tetanus (CDT) and polio (Sabin). Children should also be immunised for measles if they have not previously contracted the virus. Immunisation is available from a general practitioner, from local council clinics and from community health centres.

LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM

A support teacher works with teachers and parents to develop special programs for children having difficulties with aspects of their learning. There is close liaison with the school counsellor and the school's Learning Support Team in the initial assessment of children in need of additional support.

SCHOOL COUNSELLOR

The counsellor's work involves assessing students with academic or social problems and liaising with staff and parents to develop strategies to overcome real or potential problems. The school counsellor works closely with the Learning Support Team and the learning difficulties teacher. A brochure detailing the role of the school counsellor is available in the foyer.

UNIFORM SHOP

Our aim is to provide quality school uniforms at a fair price. The Uniform Shop is operated as part of the P&C association and run by a group of volunteers. The service provides a convenient location for parents to purchase uniforms, and benefits the children since all money raised is used by the P&C to provide extra resources for the school.

The Uniform Shop sells all major items of the school uniform, plus many extras. Some items, specific to Mt Colah Public School's uniform, are only available through our Uniform Shop. These items are marked with an asterisk(*) on the School Uniform Policy document.

Pre-loved school clothing is available for purchase, with some items of the uniform able to be sold through the uniform shop for a small commission - conditions apply. Donations are always greatly appreciated.

Price list and order forms are available in the office foyer and orders can be placed in an envelope and mailed in the Uniform Shop letter box, also situated in the office foyer.
